We are thrilled to announce a special, hands-on workshop by Loplao in collaboration with the British Library. Join us for an immersive workshop that explores the rich history and beautiful script of the Tibetan language. Whether you are a complete beginner or a language enthusiast, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn the alphabet and interact with centuries-old Tibetan texts.

Loplao founder/director Tenzin Choephel Ju will introduce a brief history of the Tibetan language and the creation of its script in the 7th century.
Exclusive Curator Showcase:
Tsering Samdrup, Tibetan Curator at the British Library, will present a selection of rare and unique items, giving you an up-close look at the Classical Tibetan loose-leaf Pecha (dpe cha) format of woodblock prints and manuscripts.
Hands-On Practice:
You will have the opportunity to read directly from historical collections and practice calligraphy. Additionally, you will also get tolearn30 consonants, 4 vowels, and practice reading some of the everyday Tibetan phrases and names.

Welcome & Overview
Trace the origins of the Tibetan language, its place in the Sino-Tibetan language family, the 7th-century script creation by Thonmi Sambhota (ཐོན་མི་སམ་བྷོ་ཊ།, and the three script revisions (སྐད་གསར་བཅད།).
10:15 – 10:45
Part One: A Brief History
The Tibetan Curator introduces the British Library collections and presents selected items, highlighting scrolls, woodblock prints, and historical manuscripts.
10:45 – 11:30
Part Two: Tibetan Collections
A short interval for refreshments and informal networking among participants.
11:30 – 11:45
Tea Break
Introduce the 30 consonants and 4 vowels. Conduct group reading practice with popular Tibetan names like Tashi (བཀྲ་ཤིས) and everyday words, and useful phrases like Thuk Je Che (ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེ།).
11:45 – 12:30
The Alphabet & Phrases
Interactive session where you apply new skills to read directly from selected historical Tibetan manuscripts and pechas (དཔེ་ཆ།).
12:30 – 13:00
Hands-On Reading
Participants use regular pens to practice writing their names or phrases.

Calligraphy
Summary of the workshop, final Q&A session, and distribution of learning resources for further study at home.
